Giants QB on track to return in Week 9 vs. Raiders after being cleared for contact

The long-awaited return of Daniel Jones could be right around the corner. The Giants quarterback was cleared for contact on Sunday morning just before New York’s Week 8 matchup against the Jets, according to CBS Sports Lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. This now paves the way for Jones to make his return next Sunday when the Giants visit the Raiders in Las Vegas in Week 9.

Jones has been sidelined for the past three games due to a neck injury. The veteran quarterback was able to practice on a limited basis last week but was ultimately ruled out.

His potential return does come at a good time for the Giants after Jones’ backup, Tyrod Taylor, left Sunday’s loss and was taken to a local hospital due to a rib injury. With Jones out and Taylor injured, that forced third-stringer Tommy DeVito to line up under center in the closing minutes of regulation and overtime for New York. Taylor, who stayed overnight at the hospital, was discharged Monday and is considered week-to-week, per ESPN.

In Jones’ five games played this season, he has completed 68.9% of his passes with a 71.7 passer rating. He’s averaging 211.6 passing yards per game and has two passing touchdowns with six interceptions. The Giants are also 1-4 in his five starts, but he’s a clear upgrade over the other quarterbacks on the roster, so this should give a boost to a team that now finds itself 2-6 on the season and in last place in the NFC East.

Giants unload DL for valuable picks, Seahawks improve talent up front

We have our first big mover of the 2023 NFL trade deadline, as the New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks have agreed to a deal. The Giants are sending defensive lineman Leonard Williams to Seattle, according to CBS Sports Lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. The compensation heading to New York is a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick.

After losing to the Jets on Sunday, the Giants are just 2-6 and likely out of the postseason picture a year after surprisingly making the playoffs (and winning a first-round game) in the first year of the Brian Daboll era. Williams is in the final season of the three-year, $63 million contract he signed with the Giants back in March of 2021. He has an $18 million base salary that will come with him to Seattle unless the Giants agree to pay a portion of it as part of the deal.

So far this season, Williams has 1.5 sacks, five quarterback hits, and one tackle for loss in eight games. Since notching a career-high 11.5 sacks in 2020, Williams has 10.5 sacks in two-and-a-half seasons. He joins a Seahawks defensive line that added Dre’Mont Jones this offseason but needed an infusion of talent up front after losing Uchenna Nwosu to injured reserve. Williams doesn’t have nearly as much pass-rush juice but he can still provide some quality snaps up front.

Williams himself commented on the transaction with an Instagram post:

A post shared by Leonard Williams (@leonardwilliams)

“It’s been an honor to be apart of the Giants organization and everything it stands for, this place will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you to all the coaches, staff, teammates and fans that have supported me through my career here. NY it’s been real. Now it’s time to continue my career back in the west coast. Seattle here we come ! GO HAWKS!!!”

Seahawks trade grade: B-
Seattle receives: Leonard Williams

Seattle certainly needed to bring in somebody to help the defensive line, and particularly the pass rush. Williams doesn’t have many sacks, but he is coming off his best pressure performance of the season (7) against the Jets and he is a very good athlete on the interior. Still, the Seahawks paid a high price for what is almost certainly a rental. Even with their 5-2 record, the need for talent up front, and the Giants eating a good portion of the contract, Seattle probably gave up more than was necessary for a player of Williams’ caliber.

Giants trade grade: A
New York receives: 2024 second-round pick, 2025 fifth-round pick

New York is picking up most of the $10 million remaining on Williams’ contract for this season, per NFL Media, but … the Giants were going to pay out that money anyway. Williams’ contract voids at the end of the year and it was highly unlikely that he would remain in New York. That the Giants were able to get second- and fifth-round picks in exchange for his services is a nice bit of business. That’s especially true because they have so many holes on their roster.

Bears QB remains week-to-week; Tyson Bagent to make third career start vs. Saints

The injury bug has made its way through NFL quarterbacks as the 2023 season nears its midpoint entering Week 9 as 11 teams have a starting signal-caller dealing with one thing or another. The Chicago Bears are one of those teams as starter Justin Fields has missed the last two games with a dislocated right thumb. In his absence, the Bears have started D-II undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent out of Shepherd and gone 1-1 in his starts — a 30-12 home win against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7 and a 30-13 road loss at the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 8. Since Fields is still “week-to-week” with his injury, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said on Monday that Bagent will make his third career, via the Chicago Tribune. Albeit just two games, here’s how Bagent has fared as an NFL starter: Bagent registered career highs in completions (25), passing attempts (37), passing yards (232) and interceptions on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 8. Bagent has another tough opponent in front of him in Week 9 in the New Orleans Saints, a defense that ranks top 10 in the NFL in scoring defense (19.3 points per game allowed, ninth in league), total defense (296.4 total yards per game allowed), third-down defense (32.4% conversion rate allowed, second in league) and passer rating allowed (73.2, second in league).

Philadelphia sends Kentavius Street and 2025 draft pick to Atlanta

The Philadelphia Eagles have made another trade deadline deal, although this time they are not acquiring any players. Philadelphia dealt defensive tackle Kentavius Street and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the to the Atlanta Falcons for a 2024 sixth-round pick.

Street wasn’t playing much in the Eagles defensive tackle rotation with Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Fletcher Cox, Milton Williams, and Marlon Tuipulotu ahead of him on the depth chart. Street had three pressures in 51 snaps this season, making the 53-man roster after a strong training camp with the Eagles.

The Falcons parted ways with a 2024 sixth-round pick to add Street to a defensive tackle rotation that consists of David Onyemata, Grady Jarrett, LaCale London, and Albert Huggins. Jarrett tore his ACL in Sunday’s loss to the Titans, so Atlanta needed some defensive line help. Street, familiar with the NFC South after spending 2022 with the New Orleans Saints, had a career-high 3.5 sacks and 19 pressures last season.

Street signed a one-year deal with the Eagles last offseason. He’ll be a free agent at the conclusion of the year.

Here are grades for the deal:

Eagles: B+
The Eagles only had three guaranteed draft picks in the 2024 NFL Draft: one first-round pick and two second-round picks. They have four projected compensatory picks coming in 2024 (one third-round pick and three fifth-round picks). There wasn’t a guaranteed Day 3 pick until the Eagles dealt Street, who was just part of their immense defensive tackle depth (Street does have to play six games in Atlanta to get the sixth-round pick). Could the Eagles be adding another defensive tackle with Street being dealt? Let’s see what Howie Roseman has cooking.

Falcons: A-
The Falcons didn’t give up much for a position of need, especially for a player that knows their system. Street had his career year in Ryan Nielsen’s defense when he was the co-defensive coordinator with the New Orleans Saints last season, notching his career-highs in snaps, pressures, and sacks. All they gave up was a conditional 2024 sixth-round pick and added another Day 3 pick (seventh-round pick in 2025) for a player that’s immediately going to help at defensive tackle. More snaps in a familiar system is significantly going to help Street as well.

Matthew Stafford day-to-day with thumb issue; Kirk Cousins tears Achilles

Week 8 of the 2023 NFL season provided plenty of on-field entertainment, from Will Levis throwing a bomb for his first career touchdown (he wound up throwing FOUR) to Kirk Cousins and the Vikings cruising past the rival Packers. The latest round of regular-season action is also bringing with it another wave of medical concerns.

Mr. Durable over the course of his long career, Cousins suffered what has since been confirmed as a torn right Achilles. The veteran suffered the non-contact Achilles injury in the fourth quarter of the Vikings’ rout of Green Bay. He was seen limping on the sidelines before receiving medical attention and being quickly ruled out. He was then carted to the locker room, replaced by fifth-round rookie backup Jaren Hall. Cousins underwent an MRI on Monday morning at Twin Cities Orthopedics, which revealed the tear. The details surrounding his looming surgery are expected to to be determined this week.

Struggling to keep the Rams competitive against the Cowboys, Stafford began favoring his right thumb in the second quarter, then left for veteran backup Brett Rypien in the second half. Stafford has been diagnosed with a UCL sprain in his right thumb, according to Sean McVay, who says the QB is day-to-day ahead of their Week 9 game against the Packers. The Rams have a bye in Week 10.

The second-year starter absorbed the full weight of a Jaguars defensive lineman just before halftime and was later ruled out with a rib injury. Pickett, who battled a knee injury earlier this year, was replaced by veteran Mitchell Trubisky, the ex-Bears starter. Mike Tomlin offered no update on Pickett following the game. The Steelers face the Titans on Thursday night.

Starting a third game in place of regular QB1 Daniel Jones, who’s been battling a neck injury, Taylor left in the second quarter with a rib issue after taking a hard hit on the way to the ground. He was later ruled out and replaced by undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito. The Giants announced that Taylor remained at the hospital overnight for observation. Taylor was discharged Monday and is considered week-to-week, per ESPN. On a positive note, Jones was cleared for contact and is slated to return in Week 9.

Atlanta subbed out QB Desmond Ridder for backup Taylor Heinicke against the Titans. The Falcons also saw London exit with a groin injury, leaving the NFC South contender shorthanded in a big day for Tennessee rookie QB Will Levis.

The Patriots lost the veteran wideout to a hard head shot from Dolphins safety DeShon Elliott, and the ex-Miami pass catcher was soon ruled out for the remainder of the day. He had logged a single catch for 14 yards before exiting.

The veteran possession target secured three passes for 36 yards and a touchdown before leaving the Patriots’ divisional matchup with the Dolphins due to a knee injury and quickly ruled out afterward. Unfortunately, the news got worse Monday as Bourne suffered a torn ACL, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones confirmed on Monday. His absence will likely mean more work for rookie Demario Douglas.

The former Raiders star entered the weekend questionable due to a hamstring issue, and he appeared to aggravate the injury early against the Jets, with New York quickly ruling him out for the rest of Week 8. Hamstring problems have troubled him for years.

The veteran center suffered a knee injury early in the Jets’ matchup with the Giants, and he wasn’t the last to leave up front.

Forced to slide over from center to guard after McGovern’s injury, Schweitzer left soon afterward with a calf injury of his own, prompting practice-squad promotion Xavier Newman to take over as Zach Wilson’s emergency center against the G-Men.

Long one of the best interior defensive linemen in the NFL, Jarrett’s season ended on Sunday when he suffered a torn ACL during the Falcons’ loss to the Tennessee Titans. Atlanta did beef up its defensive line in free agency this offseason, but will sorely miss Jarrett’s presence up front.

The Steelers’ star safety suffered a hamstring injury early against the Jaguars, pulling up gimpy while trailing wideout Christian Kirk in coverage. He was initially ruled doubtful to return, then ruled out, with Damontae Kazee elevated to the lineup. Already, head coach Mike Tomlin announced Monday that Fitzpatrick will be out for Pittsburgh’s Week 9 matchup with the Titans on Thursday.

Lions vs. Raiders DraftKings, FanDuel expert MNF lineup advice

The Week 8 NFL schedule wraps up with a prime time matchup between the Detroit Lions and Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football. Kickoff at Ford Field in Detroit is at 8:15 p.m. ET. After being listed as questionable due to illness, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown has been cleared to play and will be available in the MNF NFL DFS player pool. He will be joined by fellow wide receiver Davante Adams as the two highest-priced players on the MNF DFS slate. Should you build your NFL DFS stacks around either player? Or should you pivot and build your NFL DFS lineups around Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, or Josh Jacobs? Before making any NFL DFS picks for Raiders vs. Lions on sites like DraftKings and FanDuel, be sure to check out the NFL DFS lineup advice, strategy and player stacks from SportsLine NFL daily Fantasy expert Jimmie Kaylor.

Kaylor is a NFL and DFS expert for SportsLine, who opened the 2022 NFL season by winning DraftKings’ NFL Showdown Thursday Kickoff Millionaire contest. He edged out over 355,000 other entrants in the contest and also has multiple five-figure tournament wins on his DFS resume. Kaylor, who cashed big all season in 2022, has covered the NFL and college football for over a decade as a member of the Pro Football Writers of America, and his background as a former college and NFL player gives him a unique perspective when building his fantasy lineups and locking in his betting picks.

Kaylor hit on epic NFL DFS picks all season in 2022. He was all over Travis Kelce’s four-touchdown performance against the Raiders on Monday Night Football, Kirk Cousins’ 460-yard, four-TD performance on Thanksgiving Day, and T.J. Hockenson’s 13 catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns in Week 15.

This year, Kaylor has been all over players like Justin Jefferson (11-159), D’Andre Swift (175-1), DeVonta Smith (4-132-1), T.J. Hockenson (7-66-2), D.J. Moore (8-230-3), David Montgomery (121-3), Ja’Marr Chase (12-141), Alvin Kamara (12-91, 76), and Jordan Addison (7-123-2) in single-game slates. Anyone who followed his picks cashed in big.

Now, Kaylor has turned his attention to the Week 8 Lions vs. Raiders matchup on Monday Night Football and just locked in his top daily Fantasy football picks. You can only see his picks and analysis at SportsLine.

Top NFL DFS picks for Raiders vs. Lions on MNF
One of Kaylor’s favorite NFL DFS picks for Monday night is Las Vegas All-Pro Davante Adams. The future Hall of Fame selection enters MNF on track to have his fourth straight 1,000-yard season in 2023, with 46 catches for 528 yards and three touchdowns. He is averaging just over 10 targets per game, and Kaylor expects him to hit or exceed that number on Monday night.

“The Lions have been solid defensively in 2023, but they have been susceptible against the pass. Detroit allows almost 260 passing yards per game, and I expect the Raiders to be forced into throwing the ball more than they’d like to. Adams enters Monday night averaging over 10 targets per game, and I expect that trend to continue. Look for Adams to finish the game with close to 10 receptions and 100+ receiving yards,” Kaylor told SportsLine.

Part of Kaylor’s MNF DFS strategy also includes rostering Detroit running back Jahmyr Gibbs. The rookie first-round pick out of Alabama has flashed the ability to develop into one of the top all-purpose running backs in the NFL, and will have the opportunity to be Detroit’s lead back with David Montgomery out. Kaylor is expecting Gibbs to thrive in his expanded role on Monday night.

“With David Montgomery already ruled out for Monday Night Football, the door is open for Jahmyr Gibbs to have another big fantasy performance against the Raiders. The first round pick out of Alabama is coming off the most productive game of his NFL career (11 carries for 68 yards and 1 rushing TD, 9 catches for 58 yards) and could run wild against the Raiders’ defense on MNF,” Kaylor said. You can see the rest of Kaylor’s NFL DFS picks here.

Kaylor is also targeting another undervalued player who could explode for huge numbers for Monday Night Football. Cardinals bench Joshua Dobbs for fifth-round rookie Clayton Tune, Kyler Murray more likely to play Week 10

Being the starting quarterback for one of the NFL’s 32 franchises can be a fleeting opportunity for some, and that is now the case for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Joshua Dobbs. The 28-year-old former fourth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2018 has seen game action for three teams — the Steelers (five games in 2018 and one game in 2020), the Titans (two starts in 2022) and the Cardinals (started the first eight games of 2023).

Now, his time under center for Arizona is in the rearview mirror as Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon announced on Monday that fifth-round rookie Clayton Tune will start against the Browns in Cleveland on Sunday if franchise quarterback Kyler Murray isn’t fully ready to return to play after suffering a torn ACL last season.

“I talked to all of the quarterbacks this morning, and we’re going to keep ramping up Kyler [Murray] and see how he progresses throughout the week. If it’s not Kyler, it’s going to be Clayton Tune,” Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon said on Monday. “I talked to all three quarterbacks, and I’m on the same page with them on how we’re going to operate moving forward.”

Dobbs threw for eight touchdowns, five interceptions and 1,569 passing yards on a 62.8% completion percentage, which adds up to an 82.1 passer rating this season, the seventh-worst in the NFL among 32 qualified quarterbacks. He also has 258 rushing yards, the second-most on the team, and a team-high three rushing touchdowns this season on 47 carries. Dobbs didn’t throw for 275 or more yards in any of his eight starts, and the Cardinals lost seven of those eight games. Their lone win this season came in a 28-16 victory against the Dallas Cowboys when they ran for a season-high 222 rushing yards. Arizona hasn’t ran for 155 or more yards on the ground as a team in any other game this season.

Given Murray’s injury status, he may play, but a start for Murray is more likely in Week 10 against the Atlanta Falcons, according to NFL Media. That means Tune, the 24-year-old 139th pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, will likely make his first career start against the Browns on Sunday, a team that has the number one total defense in the league (260.0 total yards per game allowed). Tune will be the eighth rookie quarterback to start in 2023, which would be the most in the NFL through Week 9 of a season since the 1970 AFL/NFL merger. This excludes the 1987 strike season when there were 14.

Tune has completed his only career NFL pass for four yards in a 20-10 road loss at the Seattle Seahawks in Week 7. He was incredibly productive in college as his 104 touchdown passes were the second-most in school history behind Case Keenum’s 155, the most in FBS history. He had his best season in 2022 with a career-high 4,074 passing yards and 40 passing touchdowns, tied for the third most in college football, trailing only 2022 Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams and eventual 2023 second overall draft pick C.J. Stroud.

Time, how to watch, TV, live stream, key matchups, prediction for ‘Monday Night Football’

Week 8 of the 2023 NFL season features a full slate of 16 games, the last of which will see the Detroit Lions play host to the Las Vegas Raiders on “Monday Night Football.”

Detroit suffered a dispiriting loss last week, having been thoroughly dismantled by the Baltimore Ravens. Las Vegas, meanwhile, lost to a Chicago Bears team starting an undrafted Division II rookie at quarterback. A week later, each of these teams is looking to get back in the win column.

The Lions remain strongly positioned in the NFC North, especially after the Vikings defeated the Packers on Sunday but lost Kirk Cousins in the process. The Raiders, meanwhile, are trying to avoid falling into the basement of the AFC West.

So, will the Lions bounce back, or will the Raiders pull off the upset? We’ll find out soon enough. Before we break down the matchup, here’s a look at how you can watch the game.

When the Raiders have the ball
This Las Vegas offense has largely struggled this season, no matter whether it has had Jimmy Garoppolo under center or not. Vegas checks in 27th in total yards and 30th in points. The Raiders have yet to score more than 21 in a game, and they have gained more than 300 yards just twice. That is brutal, ugly stuff.

Meanwhile, up until getting absolutely roasted by the Ravens a week ago, the Lions had been quite good defensively. They allowed just one of their first six opponents to top 24 points, and held two of them to single-digits. Only the Seahawks generated more than 350 yards of offense, and that game went to overtime. Of course, Baltimore just lit them up for 503 yards and put 38 on the scoreboard, so the potential is there for a good offense to do some damage.

Alas, the Raiders do not have a good offense. They do almost nothing well. Josh Jacobs looks nothing like the All-Pro player he was last season. In fact, he looks worse than he did during his first three years in the NFL. Jacobs is averaging a career-worst (by a mile) 2.9 yards per carry just a year after posting a career-best 4.9 per-carry mark.

But the passing game has perhaps been even more disappointing, with the combination of Garoppolo, Brian Hoyer, and Aidan O’Connell posting just 6.7 yards per attempt and an 8-to-12 touchdown-to-interception ratio while and completed just 13 (THIRTEEN!) passes of 20 yards or more. Not 20 air yards. 20 yards gained.

Las Vegas has been able to neutralize pressure by having the QBs get the ball out incredibly quickly, but it hasn’t much mattered. This has been an inert, inept offense. And it’s going up against a unit that’s had a lot of success this year.

When the Lions have the ball
Jared Goff is a different quarterback when playing at home in the friendly confines of Ford Field — and when he’s able to operate from a clean pocket. The difference in his passing performance between home games and road games since arriving in Detroit is stark, and he has remained one of the NFL’s most susceptible quarterbacks to pressure during that time as well.

Luckily for the Lions, they’re playing this game at home. Also luckily for the Lions, they’re playing it against the Raiders. Maxx Crosby is utterly fantastic and remains one of the best edge rushers in the game, but the Raiders have almost nobody else who can generate pressure. Despite employing Crosby, who’s sixth among 95 players who have rushed the passer at least 150 times with a 17.9% pressure rate, the Raiders as a team have recorded a sack, hit, or hurry on just 31.3% of opponent dropbacks, the eighth-lowest rate in football.

Specifically, Goff tends to deliver over the middle, especially to slot receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, tight end Sam LaPorta and rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Guess which area of the field the Raiders are worst at defending? That’d be the middle of the field, where they rank 30th in FTN’s DVOA. If you can’t get pressure and you can’t prevent passes to the very area of the field your opponent prefers to attack, you are probably in trouble as a defense.

That’s presumably going to be the case even without David Montgomery, who is expected to miss another game with the ribs injury he suffered a couple of weeks ago. Gibbs and Craig Reynolds should be the primary ball-carriers, and Detroit checks in 11th in the NFL in yards before contact per carry so far this season, it’s not difficult at all to see the Lions getting something going on the ground here as well.

In other words, the Lions are extremely well set up for offensive success, however they decide to pursue it. Such is the benefit of going up against a defense that has struggled to deal with just about every kind of offense so far this year.

Prediction: Lions 31, Raiders 16

Detroit is coming off a disastrous loss a week ago, but this opponent is not nearly of the same quality. The Raiders have exclusively defeated teams with poor offenses so far this season, and this Lions team does not have a poor offense. If they can get anything going at all, it’s unlikely that Vegas can keep up.

Monday Night Football picks, predictions from NFL model on 27-14 roll

The Detroit Lions and Las Vegas Raiders can get back on the winning track on Monday Night Football in NFL Week 8. The Lions (5-2) had won four in a row before a 38-6 loss to the Ravens last week. The Raiders (3-4) saw their modest two-game win streak snapped in Chicago when they fell 30-12 to the Bears eight days ago. Detroit quarterback Jared Goff leads one of the top offenses, while Las Vegas will welcome quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo back from a concussion and back injury to stabilize its unit. The teams last met in 2019, a 32-24 Raiders victory in Oakland. Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown was questionable with an illness, but is active for MNF.

Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET at Ford Field. Detroit is a seven-point favorite, and the over/under for total points scored is 46.5 in the latest Raiders vs. Lions odds from SportsLine consensus. Before you make any Lions vs. Raiders picks, you need to see the NFL predictions and betting advice from SportsLine’s advanced computer model.

The model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up well over $7,000 for $100 players on top-rated NFL picks since its inception. The model enters Week 8 of the 2023 NFL season on an incredible 173-122 run on top-rated NFL picks that dates back to the 2017 season. It is also on a 27-14 roll on top-rated NFL picks since Week 7 of last season.

The model also ranked in the top 10 on NFLPickWatch four of the past six years on straight-up NFL picks and beat more than 94 percent of CBS Sports Football Pick’em players four times during that span. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now, the model has simulated Raiders vs. Lions 10,000 times and just revealed its coveted NFL picks and predictions. You can head to SportsLine now to see the model’s picks. Here are several NFL odds and betting lines for Vikings vs. 49ers:

Raiders vs. Lions spread: Detroit -7
Raiders vs. Lions Over/Under: 46.5 points
Raiders vs. Lions money line: Las Vegas +282, Detroit -358
LV: Raiders are 4-4 against the spread as road underdogs under Josh McDaniels (since 2022)
DET: Lions are 15-5 against the spread at home under coach Dan Campbell (since 2021)

Why the Lions can cover
Detroit is 14-3 against the spread over its past 17 games, the best in the league over that span. It has the NFL’s fourth-best offense, averaging 377 yards per game, and No. 5 passing game (259). The Lions’ defense is second against the run (76.3). Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who has 4.5 sacks, an interception and two fumble recoveries, will try to get after Jimmy Garoppolo.

The Raiders lead the NFL in turnovers with 15, and 12 of those are interceptions, including eight from Garoppolo in five starts. Goff is fifth in the NFL in passing yards with 1,902 and has 11 TD passes. Amon-Ra St. Brown has been the quarterback’s top target and has four 100-yard games. Jahmyr Gibbs will carry the load in the backfield with David Montgomery out, and the rookie is averaging 4.9 yards per carry. Las Vegas allows 129 rushing yards per game (24th in NFL). See who to back at SportsLine.

Why the Raiders can cover
Detroit allowed 501 yards to the Ravens last week, 357 through the air. The Raiders are 3-2, with losses to Buffalo and Pittsburgh, with starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo under center. Garoppolo has completed 68% of his passes for 1,079 yards and seven TDs. Receiver Davante Adams has 528 receiving yards, while Jakobi Myers has 385 despite the quarterback issues.

Las Vegas is 6-1 against the spread in its past seven Monday Night Football games, and running back Josh Jacobs is an X-factor. The NFL’s leading rusher in 2022 (1,653 yards) is averaging just 2.9 yards per carry, but has 26 receptions and 562 total yards. The Lions yielded 146 rushing yards last week and allow 21.6 points per game (19th in NFL). Las Vegas is 10th in total defense and fifth against the pass (187 yards per game). Maxx Crosby has 6.5 sacks, and Lions quarterback Jared Goff has been sacked 15 times. See who to back at SportsLine.

How to make Lions vs. Raiders picks
SportsLine’s model is leaning Over the total, projecting 50 combined points. The model also says one side of the spread hits in well over 50% of simulations. You can only see the model’s NFL picks and analysis at SportsLine.
